create the ideal workspace

A new year brings so many new ideas! January is always the time for new goals, new habits and new ways to live a healthy life. One of the most important ways to start your year off well is to create the ideal workspace to get all the things done!

Create the Ideal Workspace

The ability to work from anywhere can be amazing. It doesn’t matter if you work from home or head in to the office each day. Most jobs allow you to set your own workflow so you can accomplish the high priority tasks first and work your way through the day.

If you work from home, you can set your schedule, be your own boss, and have all the comforts of home available at all times. If you do work from home, the one issue that some people have is staying focused. This common problem can be remedied by creating the ideal workspace to be productive and get your work done.

If you head into the office for your workday, you may have space constraints or rules that need to be followed based on your workplace. It doesn’t matter – we can still create the ideal workspace for you to get all the things done!

Creating the ideal office space will mean different things to different people, but there’s definitely some guidelines we’ve noticed help people most over the years. Consider some of these tips when creating your own ideal workspace!

Have a Separate Space

It doesn’t really matter WHERE you work, as long as you create the ideal workspace to get your work done.

One of the most important things you can do when you work from home is make sure your work space is completely separate from your living space. If possible, it’s best to have a designated room to do your work in. This makes having a work-life balance much easier. For example, if you have your office in your living room, you might be tempted to watch TV instead. Worse yet, if you have a workspace in your main living areas, you may be tempted to keep working with no rest. That’s not ideal either!!

Having a separate space makes sure you’re free of distractions and that when you enter the office area, you feel like you’re in work mode.

This is easier when you work in an office, but you’ll still want to keep work separate from your lunch, personal possessions and keep it tidy!

Make Sure Your Equipment is Up to the Task

No matter where you work, you’ll need a few things to make sure you’re productive. A decent computer is essential, as well as a strong internet connection. You’ll need a good desk and an ergonomically designed office chair. IF you’ll be spending a lot of time sitting, you’ll want your chair to be comfortable and designed for back health. You’ll thank yourself in the long run!

Make it Your Own

No matter if you work from home or head into the office, there’s one important thing to keep in mind – it’s YOUR workspace! Design it how you want it to be. Hang pictures and art on the wall that you love. Put some stress relievers on the desk. Put some succulents in the space to get some greenery in there. Whatever inspires and motivates you to work more productively, do it! Part of the beauty of creating the ideal workspace is that you can customize your work life to fit your style and needs. Here are some of my favorite things in my workspace – both at home and at work!

  • Art work that I love – it doesn’t matter if you purchase an art print or use something your kids made, surrounding yourself with items YOU love will create a happier work environment
  • A clean desk – I need space to work. I don’t have a large desk, so I need to keep it tidy. I can’t work with piles and papers all around. Take a few minutes between tasks to tidy up before moving on to the next task. At the end of your work day, tidy one more time and put everything away so when you come back in the morning you’re starting with a clean slate!
  • Aromatherapy – there is definitely something to having a scent influence your work! Depending on my mood, I’ll choose something bright and cheery or something calm and relaxing. If you’re able, use a diffuser to diffuse essential oils. My personal favorites are from Jordan Essentials. If a diffuser is out of the question, use an essential oil spray and spray in front of a room fan or air register. It will scent the room without being overpowering and you’ll still reap the same aromatherapy benefits!
  • Stay healthy while you work! I always keep some Magnesium at my desk. Why? Staring at a computer screen gives me “tech neck” which is a positional stiffness in your neck that can lead to muscle spasm and headaches. I always keep a magnesium stick close by to use on my neck, and some magnesium spray to spray between my shoulder blades so I can keep going!
