healthy habits for busy moms

Busy moms simply DO NOT have enough time for themselves. As a busy mom myself, I’m absolutely running between school pickup, practice drop-off and dance lessons, just in time to get home and try to make a healthy dinner. Healthy habits for busy moms seems kind of a long way off!

Eeekkk…. where was the 5 seconds to take a deep breath in there? Sometimes it just doesn’t happen.

Busy moms deserve time for healthy habits. It might be a few minutes here and there instead of a long, luxurious spa day, but it should happen no matter what. If school pickup is a priority, so should good sleep, drinking enough water, and eating nutritious food, right? Let’s dive in to 5 Healthy Habits for Busy Moms!

Why Healthy Habits Matter

All Moms are busy in their own ways. Some are busy at home, some are busy in the car line waiting for practice to be over, and some are busy trying to balance work life and home life. I bet you fall somewhere in there, too! Prioritizing your health no matter how busy you are will ensure you live a long & healthy life.

Creating healthy habits inside a busy schedule can actually help you get more done in day, and provides a nice boost of energy to check off your to do list! Healthy habits can also improve your mood and help you manage even the most stressful days.

Long term, daily healthy habits can help you fight off illness and lead to a longer, happier life. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Morning Routine: Starting the Day Right

It doesn’t matter what time you wake up in the morning. If you are able to give yourself a little bit of time to yourself before the rest of the house wakes up, you’re doing great!

Including healthy habits in a morning routine can energize your day and help you feel accomplished. Some simple morning habits you can implement are:

  • Make Your Bed
  • Drink a Glass of Water with Lemon
  • Stretch
  • Read a motivational book or inspirational story
  • Recite affirmations
  • Drink coffee in the quiet with your favorite book

I’m no morning routine expert, these are just a few things that have helped me over the years raise 3 kids and 2 dogs – if it wasn’t for a little quiet time in the morning, I think I would have lost my mind along time ago!!

I won’t go deep into this, but be sure to include hydrating your body and eating a good breakfast. Both should always be part of a healthy morning routine!

Making Time for Exercise

We all know how important moving our body can be. But sometimes, we just can’t get to the gym or to a yoga class or even a peaceful walk alone. That’s okay!! You can include healthy exercise habits in your day while you’re out getting things done!

  • Park further away at the grocery store
  • Sneak in a lunchtime walk
  • Stretch to an online video
  • Aim for short but impactful workouts – 15 minutes on a treadmill is better than none at all!

No matter what you choose for exercise, make sure it something you enjoy and something you can be consistent with. One walk every once in a while is not gonna cut it!!

Prioritizing Self-Care

The general theme here is to take care of yourself! When it comes to healthy habits for busy moms, self care is usually down at the bottom of the list. We need to set a little extra time aside devoted to things we enjoy and make us feel good. It doesn’t have to be bubble baths and spa days – it can be anything you choose that makes you feel good!

  • Read your favorite book
  • Paint your nails
  • Do a face mask
  • Relax on the couch

Rest and relaxation is key here – and most times, busy moms do not really rest even when they relax! Make sure you can fit in sometime to go offline, rest your mind and relax your body.

Getting Sufficient Sleep

Ahhhh a good night’s sleep. That sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Getting a good night’s sleep can make or break the next day, and consecutive nights of poor sleep can really have a negative impact. Make sure you’re setting some ground rules for a good night’s sleep!

  • Create a night routine to train your body it’s time for bed
  • Quickly tidy up the house. Waking up to a clean house is awesome!!
  • Log off before you get in bed – no pillow scrolling!
  • Cleanse your face & brush your teeth.
  • Use a calming essential oil blend in a diffuser or spray

Stress and anxiety can cause havoc on our sleep. If you suffer from either one, add in a few stress relieving exercises such as gentle stretching and/or deep breathing before you get into bed. It works!

It might be hard at first to stick to a healthy habit, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Habits take time to cement into your day! Set a realistic goal and ask for help if you need it.
